Jean Walker

Jean Walker, Community Midwifery Coordinator, George Eliot NHS Trust

Jean is the Community Midwifery Coordinator at George Eliot NHS Trust in Nuneaton, Warwickshire following her retirement from Head of Midwifery. As a senior Midwife and the community Midwifery co-ordinator she is leading the move of Midwives from GP surgeries into Children’s Centres. Jean has developed a specialised team for young parents and vulnerable parents to focus resources into particular areas of need. Current projects include ‘Time to Care’ comparing and reviewing community care to develop the ‘productive community’. The team also a pilot site for the ‘scanning pen’ system for recording and transmitting information from community to hospital.

Jean has always promoted woman centred care originally by working in a one to one midwifery team and later as a consultant Midwife in Normality. Later this role evolved into Consultant Midwife for Public Health focussing on Child Protection, Homeless and substance using women and those women involved with the sex trade. In addition to this, Jean was able to work alongside Consultant nurses to care for a growing number of women seeking asylum. She worked with multidisciplinary teams to develop services and raise awareness of issues such as child protection, consanguinity, the impact of rape and torture and female genital mutilation.
