Dr Katerina Kolyva
Katerina leads the NMC's policy development function as well as evidence and research strategy.
Prior to working at the NMC, Katerina was a senior policy adviser to the European Commission and Parliament in Brussels and Luxembourg. In that role she contributed to policy implementation in the fields of education, health, research and development.
Her role also consisted of the evaluation of more than 400 EU-funded projects as well as the establishment of international networks of experts in the fields of education, cultural heritage and health.
Katerina was selected in 2005 as one of the key stakeholders that led the transition of the EU strategy from education to life-long learning. From 2002 until 2007 she coordinated a pan-European study on motivation in language learning that was evaluated by the then European Commissioner as an example of best practice. In 2004, Katerina was invited to lead the business strategy of a network of European nursing regulators.
Katerina holds a PhD in European studies and parallel to her career in the EU institutions, she has lectured on policy, EU politics and project management in the Universities of Kent, Aalborg (Denmark) and Vytautas Magnus (Lithuania). She has also been invited by the University of Jordan, the Tuscany Region in Italy and several academic and other networks to provide training on methodologies of policy development and evaluation.
Katerina is fluent in five languages and enjoys travel writing and visiting cultural heritage sites in the UK and Europe.
