Speaker Biography

David Starkey

David Starkey is a Senior Lecturer at Portsmouth Business School, and Faculty Learning & Teaching Coordinator.

His teaching specialties include cloud computing and enterprise resource planning, and he is the SAP University Alliance contact at Portsmouth. Before becoming an academic ten years ago, David worked for several multinational HEVAC companies in engineering and project management over a twenty-year period, designing, constructing and testing pieces of large capital equipment.

He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Southampton University, an MBA from Portsmouth, a postgraduate diploma in Information Systems from Portsmouth, and a post graduate certificate in education, also from Portsmouth. David will be starting a DBA course in September 2014 researching the use of TEAL/SCALE-UP principles to deliver group-based education in online environments.

As Learning & Teaching Coordinator, David has defined the vision for the technology enhanced active learning (TEAL) spaces in the Business School, applying principles defined in the USA under the auspices of the ‘SCALE-UP’ project led by Professor Robert Beichner of North Carolina State University.

Prior to that, David introduced screen and lecture capture tools to the Business School that have now gone university-wide, including TechSmith’s Camtasia Relay package. These form the vehicle for the creation of pre-work that students do before they come to class, work on which they are tested during a ‘’Readiness Assurance Process.’

David’s current research interests include the application of ERP to improve company performance, the use of active learning as part of a balanced educational offer for students, incorporating the use of TEAL, Team-Based Learning (TBL) and problem/project-based learning (PBL) in higher education.
