Before coming to Berkeley in 2013, Dirks was executive vice-president for the arts and sciences at Columbia University, which he joined in 1997. An internationally renowned historian and anthropologist, he is well known for his commitment to high-quality, accessible undergraduate education and emphasis on innovative interdisciplinary and international initiatives.
