A social anthropologist with a PhD from Delhi University, Professor Visvanathan taught at the Delhi School of Economics, and was previously senior fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, and professor at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, in Gandhinagar. He took up his current role in 2012.
