Professor McFarland’s research field is the social and organisational dynamics of educational systems. He is a recipient of the American Journal of Sociology Gould Prize and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
