Elected to Kent County Council in 1989; Chairman of Environment Committee in 1990; Leader of Conservative Group 1993-2005; Leader of KCC May 1997 to October 2005.

Former Chairman of Kent Thameside Delivery Board; Trustee of Institute of Social Justice.
